Mardi Gras is a vibrant celebration in New Orleans, marked by lively parades, colorful beads, and the indulgence of king cake. But while Mardi Gras is legendary in the U.S., Brazil takes the concept of pre-Lenten celebration to another level with Carnival in Rio de Janeiro—an electrifying, larger-than-life festival that should be on everyone’s bucket list.
Having attended Carnival in Rio, I can say without a doubt—it’s the greatest show on Earth. If you love Mardi Gras, you must experience Rio Carnival at least once.

The VIP Experience: A Night in a Camarote at the Sambadrome
When we attended Carnival in Rio, we went all in and splurged on a VIP Camarote, a private suite inside the Sambadrome Marquês de Sapucaí, the epicenter of the world-famous Samba Parade Competition.
Our chauffeur-driven car brought us straight to the Sambadrome, where we were escorted to our exclusive suite, shared with about 30 other guests. The food and drinks flowed freely as we settled into front-row seats overlooking the runway of the world’s most extravagant parade.

The Thrill of the Samba Schools
Each night, six elite samba schools take the stage, competing in a mind-blowing spectacle of dance, music, and elaborate floats. The energy is palpable—as soon as the first dancer steps onto the parade runway, the clock starts ticking.
Samba school performances are grand theatrical spectacles, with up to 50,000 participants per school. Each school has 85 to 95 minutes to showcase a blend of song, storytelling, costumes, dance, and rhythm. Judges closely scrutinize every aspect—movement, attire, music, and theme—making the competition fiercely intense.
We stayed until 5:30 AM, completely mesmerized by the parade. As dawn approached, our host led us back to our private car, and we returned to our hotel, still buzzing from the once-in-a-lifetime experience.
On Ash Wednesday, the judges announce the Champion Samba School, crowning the best of the best.

Beyond the Sambadrome: The Street Parties of Rio
While the Sambadrome competition is the main event, Rio’s Carnival is much more than just the parade.
Across the city, thousands of people flood the streets for wild, free-spirited blocos—street parties with live music, costumes, and endless dancing. These blocos bring the soul of Carnival to the people, offering an experience closer to New Orleans’ Mardi Gras, but on a much larger scale.
Some of the most famous blocos include:
🎭 Cordão do Bola Preta – The biggest street party, drawing over a million people in Rio’s downtown.
🥁 Bangalafumenga – A bloco that mixes traditional samba with other Brazilian rhythms.
🎷 Simpatia é Quase Amor – A more laid-back, family-friendly bloco in Ipanema.
Why Carnival in Rio is a Bucket List Must-Do
If you think Mardi Gras is a party, wait until you experience Carnival in Rio. From the high-energy samba performances to the endless street celebrations, the vibrant costumes, and the sheer passion of the Brazilian people, Rio’s Carnival is unlike anything else in the world.
