China by Sea: Discovering the Heart of a Nation on a Small Ship Luxury Cruise

Sailing along the coast of China aboard a small luxury ship is one of the most elegant, immersive, and efficient ways to explore this vast and fascinating country. On cruises through Asia, I’ve had the opportunity to visit China’s most iconic coastal cities—Shanghai, Beijing (via Tianjin), Hong Kong, Xiamen, and Sanya. Some of these ports included overnight stays, giving me the chance to dive deeper, stay later, and connect with the soul of each destination.

And let me tell you: China rewards curiosity. Culture, history, innovation, and hospitality come together in ways that continue to surprise and inspire me.

Why Cruise the Coast of China?

A number of small luxury cruise lines offer itineraries that circle China’s coastline, offering a seamless way to experience the country’s extraordinary diversity—without the hassle of internal flights, long train rides, or constant packing and unpacking. You wake up in a new city nearly every day, yet travel in total comfort.

From expertly curated excursions and world-class cuisine to elegant onboard experiences, cruising allows for both deep cultural immersion and a stress-free pace. Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, a photographer, or a curious traveler, this is the perfect blend of discovery and indulgence.

Why Visiting China Matters

To visit China is to step into one of the world’s oldest civilizations—still evolving with breathtaking speed. The scale of its history is epic, spanning emperors and revolutions, philosophies and inventions. And yet it’s also a country full of everyday moments: sipping jasmine tea in a Shanghai courtyard, wandering a market in Hong Kong, or watching schoolchildren race down the Great Wall of China.

China challenges your assumptions, enchants your senses, and leaves you with a deeper understanding of what it means to travel meaningfully.

What We Experienced in Each Port

Shanghai

Shanghai feels like New York, Paris, and the future—blended into one dazzling skyline. We walked the historic Bund at sunset, colonial architecture on one side and the neon glow of Pudong on the other.

From the Shanghai Tower’s dizzying observation deck to the serene pavilions of Yu Yuan Garden, every stop revealed another layer of this ever-evolving city. We explored Old Town, admired the Jade Buddha, and spent an unforgettable night in the French Concession’s vibrant Xin Tian Di district.

The highlight? A breathtaking Chinese acrobat show that left us speechless.

Beijing (via Tianjin)

While the ship docked in Tianjin, we journeyed inland to Beijing—and it was more than worth it. We’ve hiked two different sections of the Great Wall (one dusted in snow), and visited the Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven, and the Forbidden City.

Tiananmen Square was just as monumental as you’d imagine. We ended the day with an iconic Peking duck dinner, local shopping, and a traditional performance—capturing both the regal and modern essence of China’s capital.

Hong Kong

There’s something cinematic about sailing into Victoria Harbour—where the world’s most vertical skyline meets misty green peaks.

We’ve done it all: riding the Peak Tram to sweeping views, bargaining at the Temple Street Night Market, crossing the harbor on the iconic Star Ferry, and marveling at mythological statues in Repulse Bay.

A sampan tour of Aberdeen Harbour gave us a glimpse of old-world fishing life. And a nighttime drive through Kowloon, glowing with neon, felt like stepping into a movie set.

From Michelin-starred dim sum to alleyway noodle shops, the culinary scene here is unmatched.

Sanya (Hainan Island)

Nicknamed “China’s Hawaii,” Sanya surprised us with its tropical beauty—turquoise water, swaying palms, and a relaxed island vibe.

We visited the Nanshan Cultural Zone, where the 108-meter-tall Guanyin statue stands watch over the sea. Our vegan lunch that day was a revelation: every dish mimicked meat or seafood using plant-based ingredients, both symbolic and stunningly delicious.

Xiamen

This charming coastal city offered a gentler rhythm. We ferried to Gulangyu Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its music schools, colonial architecture, and leafy walking paths. It was peaceful, timeless, and the perfect final stop on our China journey.
