Is Antarctica on your bucket list? For many, it’s the ultimate dream destination—but few ever get to experience this remote and pristine continent. Last year, my husband David and I embarked on our final continent—Antarctica—and it was nothing short of extraordinary. Let me take you on the journey and share tips to help you “wanderlust” from home.
Antarctica: The Ice Desert
Antarctica is a vast ice desert, larger than the U.S. and Mexico combined. Known as “The Ice”or “The White Continent,” it is covered by an immense ice sheet, creating a stark, otherworldly beauty. With no vegetation or permanent settlements, it remains one of the most pristine and untouched places on Earth.

Planning the Adventure
Preparing for a trip to Antarctica is no small feat. Nervous about the cold weather, I researched the right gear: base layers, insulated jackets, waterproof boots, and gloves—two pairs of everything, just in case. YouTube videos from fellow travelers were invaluable in ensuring we were ready for every adventure.
Packing was another challenge. With just a carry-on and backpack, I had to plan for freezing conditions in Antarctica and the warm summer weather of Argentina. Stops in Buenos Aires, Ushuaia, Iguazú Falls, and Mendozaadded complexity—but I managed!
We booked our journey through the Flying Longhorns, a Texas Exes alumni group, in partnership with Orbridge Travel. Albatros Expeditions manages the Ocean Victoryfor its Antarctica journeys, offering immersive polar expedition experiences. Our ship is was a purpose-built, eco-friendly expedition vessel featuring 93 staterooms (including four junior suites, one of which we enjoyed), modern lecture lounge, observation lounge, library, restaurants, a wellness area, polar spa, and a Green Initiative Program.

Pre-Antarctica Adventures
Before setting sail, we spent a few days in Buenos Aires, soaking in its vibrant culture. From there, we traveled to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, and stayed at the beautiful Arakur Resort, perched high in the hills with stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
Exploring Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego (End of the World National Park) was another highlight. We couldn’t resist a photo op at the Unidad Postal Fin del Mundo, the world’s southernmost post office. The cooler weather here was a perfect prelude to Antarctica, and I was grateful for the extra sweaters I packed.

Sailing to the White Continent
We anxiously awaited boarding time, filled with anticipation for the adventure ahead. Once aboard the Ocean Victory, we received our expedition jackets and wet boots, and attended a welcome-aboard lecture. Then came the Drake Passage, known for its towering waves, which made walking on the ship nearly impossible! A medical emergency forced us to return to Ushuaia, but after safely evacuating the passenger, we resumed our journey—18 hours behind schedule.
Our second crossing was smoother, and by day three, we reached the South Shetland Islands, where the real adventure began.

The Antarctic Experience
The moment we spotted an iceberg the size of Manhattan outside our window, we rushed to the balcony for photos. It was surreal. Sailing into the Gerlache Strait, we were greeted by towering ice cliffs, sparkling glaciers, and majestic peaks.
Each day included Zodiac landings, where we encountered Antarctica’s incredible wildlife: bustling penguin rookeries, seals lounging on ice floes, and even whales breaching nearby. Every experience felt like stepping into another world.

4 Unforgettable Experiences on an Antarctica Cruise
1. Zodiac Excursions and Landings
These inflatable boats brought us close to glaciers and towering icebergs. Stepping onto land offered incredible wildlife encounters: playful Gentoo Penguins, Weddell and Leopard Seals, and seabirds soaring overhead.
2. The Polar Plunge
Jumping from a Zodiac into the 32°F waters was an exhilarating adrenaline rush. With towels and hot drinks waiting on the ship, it was an unforgettable moment of adventure.
3. Open-Air Camping Under the Stars
Cuddled in weatherproof bivy bags on the Antarctic Peninsula, surrounded by the icy wilderness, camping under the starry Antarctic sky was pure magic—a serene, otherworldly experience.
4. Kayaking in Antarctic Waters
Gliding through glassy, iceberg-dotted bays in kayaks brought us closer to seals, penguins, and even whales. This peaceful activity provided an intimate connection to Antarctica’s pristine landscapes.

Antarctic Highlights
• Half Moon Island: A crescent-shaped gem framed by towering mountains, offering stunning views and the chance to observe Chinstrap Penguins, seals, and seabirds up close.
• Paradise Bay: A leopard seal lounging on an iceberg, lazily lifting a flipper as if to wave, stole the show.
• Port Lockroy: Nicknamed “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” we met with the research team and learned about penguin monitoring, climate studies, and life at this historic Antarctic outpost.
• Iceberg Graveyard: An enchanting early evening visit to a site where massive icebergs rest in shallow waters, creating breathtaking displays of light and shadow.

A Journey to Remember
After an incredible week in Antarctica, it was time to head home. Crossing the Drake Passage again, this time in calmer seas, we arrived back in Ushuaia, said our farewell to new travelers. After exploring the charming town, we flew to Buenos Aires for the next leg of our journey—but that’s a story for another time.
Traveling to Antarctica isn’t just a trip; it’s a life-changing experience. The untouched landscapes, extraordinary wildlife, and profound remoteness make it like nowhere else on Earth.
For me, it wasn’t just about ticking off my seventh continent—it was about connecting with a place so pristine and awe-inspiring that it forever changed my perspective on the planet.
