That’s why we decided to escape the hustle and bustle and take the ultimate summer family vacation, creating space to reconnect, laugh, and explore in ways we never imagined.

Our adventure began in vibrant Vancouver, the perfect launchpad for endless exploration. Over two unforgettable weeks, we discovered the serene beauty of Victoria, the majestic peaks of Whistler, and the awe-inspiring landscapes of Alaska aboard the Disney Wonder. This trip was more than a vacation—it was a chance to bond as a family while experiencing jaw-dropping beauty, thrilling adventures, and magical Disney moments.
Let me take you along on this unforgettable journey to inspire your next great family escape. Whether you’re drawn to bustling cityscapes, serene gardens, thrilling mountain peaks, or breathtaking glaciers, this trip had something for everyone. It truly was the perfect summer getaway.
Welcome to Vancouver: Where It All Begins
The moment we landed in Vancouver, we were struck by its vibrant energy. This modern city, surrounded by lush green spaces and sparkling harbors with snow-capped mountains in the distance, felt like it had been designed just for adventure seekers like us.
We checked into the Fairmont Pacific Rim, a luxurious hotel that perfectly set the tone for our trip. Our first stop was Canada Place, where we wandered along the waterfront, marveling at the living roof and the towering 2010 Olympic Cauldron. Tiny seaplanes buzzed across the harbor, and we couldn’t resist dining at Cactus Club Café in Coal Harbour, enjoying delicious food paired with spectacular views.
A short drive brought us to Kitsilano Beach Park, Vancouver’s most popular beach, often compared to California’s Venice Beach with a Canadian twist. The beach was alive with activity: kayaking, paddleboarding, biking, and volleyball filled the scene, while families enjoyed picnics and the Kitsilano Pool offered stunning ocean and mountain views. We wrapped up our visit with a stop at The Cider House, sampling crisp, locally crafted ciders—a refreshing way to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.

Vancouver: A City of Endless Adventures
For the next few days, we soaked up everything this vibrant city had to offer.
Must-Do Activities in Vancouver
• Stanley Park: Strolling along the Stanley Park Seawall, the world’s longest uninterrupted waterfront path, was breathtaking, with stunning ocean views at every turn. We ended our visit with a delicious meal at the iconic Teahouse Restaurant, surrounded by natural beauty.
• Capilano Suspension Bridge Park: Crossing the swaying bridge high above the rainforest was thrilling, but the real highlight was the treetop walkways, offering a fresh perspective on Vancouver’s lush greenery. The Totem Pole displays were equally fascinating, showcasing Indigenous art and culture.
• Grouse Mountain: After a scenic gondola ride to the summit, we were treated to a lively lumberjack show and panoramic views. The adventure peaked with a helicopter ride, where we lucked out with an extended flight to refuel in Vancouver—an unforgettable experience!
• Granville Island: The bustling Public Market was a feast for the senses, with artisan goods and fresh seafood. Lunch at Sandbar Seafood, overlooking the waterfront, was a perfect way to soak up the island’s charm.
• Museum of Anthropology: A fascinating cultural treasure, the museum captivated us with its displays of First Nations artifacts, totem poles, and insightful exhibits that showcased the rich history and culture of the Musqueam people.
Of course, Vancouver’s food scene deserves its own spotlight. Dinner at Blue Water Café in Yaletown was unforgettable, with oysters, halibut, and trout that rivaled the city’s views. We also loved dining at Miku, where aburi-style sushi and spectacular harbor scenery made for a perfect evening.
The Magic of Disney: Cruising Through Alaska
The magic began the moment we stepped aboard the Disney Wonder. As we entered the atrium, a cheerful cast member announced:
“Disney Cruise Line welcomes the Badger family!”
The applause from the crew and guests made us feel like VIPs as we set out on an unforgettable adventure.
After decorating our door with Disney-themed magnets and hanging our Fish Extender, the grandkids had a blast delivering gifts and treats to fellow cruisers. They’d rush back to our room after every adventure to see what new surprises had been left in their bag—it was like a magical treasure hunt every day!
That evening, the Bon Voyage Party on Deck was pure Disney magic. Families in Mickey ears and Disney-themed outfits danced with characters as music filled the air. The iconic Disney horn chimed, and we waved goodbye to the Vancouver skyline. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and emerald forests, our adventure had officially begun!

Glacier Viewing at Stikine Icecap: A Perfect Day for All
After a relaxing sea day, we sailed into the majestic fjords of the Stikine Icecap, surrounded by soaring cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and glacial-blue waters. Icebergs floated peacefully by, and the occasional crack of ice breaking apart echoed through the stillness. While the adults marveled at the breathtaking scenery and snapped photos of this natural wonder, the kids were happily immersed in activities at their clubs or enjoying the Wide World of Sportson deck. It was a perfect balance of adventure and relaxation for everyone.
Ports of Call in the Inside Passage
There is a plethora of excursions to choose from in the Inside Passage, especially for those drawn to active adventures like hiking, glacier trekking, and wildlife encounters. Here’s what we selected and loved during our journey:
• Skagway: This charming walking town was a delight to explore, but the highlight was the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway. Winding through mountains and over bridges, we stood on the platform to capture unbelievable photos of the breathtaking scenery. It was an unforgettable experience and one we highly recommend.
• Juneau: The Taku Glacier Lodge offered stunning views across to the glacier, a perfect backdrop as we enjoyed freshly grilled salmon for lunch. Afterward, we took a nature hike through the lodge property, where we were thrilled to spot Mont the bear in the wild—a truly unforgettable moment.
• Ketchikan: We had the privilege of joining an exclusive event at the Anan Wildlife Observatory, limited to just 60 people. Watching bears fish for salmon in their natural habitat was awe-inspiring. Others in our group chose a Misty Fjords tour, where they cruised through serene waters surrounded by towering cliffs—both groups returned with amazing stories.
We enjoyed another relaxing sea day, savoring the final moments of our magical journey aboard the Disney Wonder. As we packed our bags and prepared for disembarkation the next morning, we reflected on the incredible experiences we had shared.
Back to Land: Whistler Awaits
After the cruise, we drove two hours to Whistler, a stunning mountain paradise. Staying at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler, we enjoyed luxury and adventure in equal measure.

Whistler Highlights
• Peak-to-Peak Gondola:The breathtaking ride between mountain peaks was unforgettable, offering incredible alpine views. A sudden storm turned it into an unexpected adventure as we were evacuated by van down the winding mountain road—a story we’ll laugh about for years.
• Biking Lost Lake:Watching downhill bikers race down the ski slopes was thrilling, but we opted for a gentler ride around Lost Lake. Surrounded by wildflowers and scenic bridges, the trails offered a peaceful escape into nature.
• Horseback Riding: We enjoyed a memorable horseback ride through the mountains, taking in panoramic views and feeling fully immersed in the natural beauty of Whistler’s rugged terrain.
• Whitewater Rafting:Tackling the rapids was an exhilarating adventure that brought us back to nature. The scenery along the way was stunning, and the experience was equal parts thrilling and refreshing—a perfect mix for our adventurous family.
• Spa at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler: After all the action, we treated ourselves to a relaxing massage at the Vida Spa, located in the Fairmont Chateau Whistler. It was the perfect way to unwind and recharge after days of exciting outdoor adventures.
Dinner at Rimrock Café was a seafood and pasta lover’s dream, while Araxi dazzled with its masterful, locally sourced dishes. Both are must-visit spots—be sure to make reservations!
Victoria: A Charming Island Escape
We took the BC Ferry to Victoria, where the iconic Fairmont Empress welcomed us with its old-world elegance. Wandering along the vibrant wharf, we enjoyed fresh seafood at Red Fish Blue Fish, a casual waterfront spot serving locally sourced dishes.
Victoria Highlights
• Butchart Gardens: This 121-year-old world-famous display garden, spanning 55 breathtaking acres, is a National Historic Site of Canada. Each section is a masterpiece, but our favorites were the Sunken Garden, the Rose Gardenbursting with fragrant blooms, and the serene Japanese Garden, a tranquil escape.
• Whale Watching: We embarked on a thrilling whale-watching tour aboard an open zodiac boat, bundled up against the cool breeze. Spotting orcas and humpback whales up close against the stunning backdrop of the Pacific was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
• Fishing Tour: For a hands-on adventure, we joined a 4-hour fishing tour from the marina. Surrounded by stunning coastal scenery, we cast our lines and returned with fresh catches—a fun and rewarding outing.
• Royal BC Museum: This treasure trove of history captivated us with its exhibits on First Nations culture, including impressive totem poles and artifacts, as well as fascinating displays about British Columbia’s natural history and early settlers.
